Fine Art Sibling Portraits | Studio Photography Hertfordshire

A Portrait That Rewards a Closer Look

There is a kind of portraiture that asks you to look closely, really closely. The kind of image that rewards a viewer who takes their time. These sibling portraits were created with exactly that intention.

The Studio Setup and Approach

This was a two-day studio session with a brother and sister, each photographed separately and later brought together as a cohesive body of work. The lighting setup was inspired by the work of photographer Martin Schoeller. Twin strip boxes fitted with grids were used to create an even, controlled light across the face, alongside a background strobe to lift the image into a clean, high key space. It is a deliberate and considered approach that removes distraction and places full attention on the subject, their expression, their character, and most importantly, their eyes.

Why the Eyes Matter

The iris becomes the focal point in portraits like these. Every image was created with large scale printing in mind, designed to be viewed up close and to hold that level of scrutiny. The detail within the iris, the catch light, and the subtle differences in each child’s gaze are what give a fine art portrait lasting value, something a family can genuinely treasure for years to come.

Consistency That Reveals Character

What I appreciate most about this approach, influenced by Schoeller’s philosophy, is how it reveals individuality through consistency. When the process remains the same for each subject, the differences become more apparent. Side by side, these two children are entirely themselves. One is reflective, the other playful, both completely distinct in character, yet the images sit together naturally. They are unified in how they were created, but individual in spirit.

Fine Art Portrait Sessions in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire

I work with families across Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, and sessions like this are available throughout the year. If you would like to discuss a fine art portrait session for your own children, I would be very happy to hear from you.
